The Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic placed an unprecedented strain on healthcare systems, pushing capacities to their limits and amplifying the emotional and physical toll on nursing leaders, frontline nurses, and clinical teams. With the spread of the global pandemic, numerous healthcare professionals have encountered significant challenges such as exhaustion, burnout, depression, and a heightened susceptibility to moral distress.

This ongoing challenge has strengthened Dr. Smith’s commitment to advancing the well-being of nurse leaders, frontline nurses, and clinical teams, supporting them in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

Dr. Smith’s Leadership During COVID-19 Pandemic:

Dr. Smith's leadership was pivotal in a time marked by a crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. As Deputy Executive Director: Chief Nursing Officer/Patient Safety Officer, she was entrusted by the CEO with the task of leading Clinical Operations for the COVID-19 Isolation Hotel Program. We successfully established six hotels between April 2020 and January 2022, staffed by 800 dedicated healthcare professionals, providing critical care coordination to 35,000 COVID-19 individuals with chronic conditions and behavioral health needs—while achieving zero fatalities and zero adverse outcomes. Her actions during this period were a testament to her leadership and profound commitment to patient care and safety.

This initiative was a testament to the power of strategic leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to patient safety. It was an honor and a privilege to work alongside an extraordinary team, delivering comprehensive, wraparound care that mitigated crisis impact and set a benchmark for innovative healthcare solutions in emergency response.
